West of Malaga on the Costa del Sol, 24 km from Malaga airport, you will find the picturesque town of Mijas Pueblo 425 meters above sea level in the southern part of Andalusia. The independent municipality with its localities Mijas Pueblo (village on the mountain), Mijas Costa (town on the bay), La Cala de Mijas (village by the sea) and Las Lagunas (suburb north of Fuengirolas) has 71,000 inhabitants and belongs to the province of Málaga.

Only a few kilometers from the Costa del Sol is the small mountain town of Mijas Pueblo, which has become a very popular destination for tourists.

The most striking, not to be missed attraction, besides the typical whitewashed houses in Mijas, are the extraordinary donkey taxis. You can find the brightly decorated gray animals (Spanish burros) at the donkey taxi stand right in front of the tourist office. There the gray animals, pulling the little funny wagons behind them, are waiting for the tourists. A visit to Mijas would not be complete without a trip with the special, unique village taxis around the place. The ride through the town with the donkey taxi costs 12 € and is a little sensation, especially for children.

There is a lot more to see in Mijas. Historic buildings, beautiful parks, curious museums and fantastic panoramic views of the Mediterranean. From the Compás viewpoint with the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peñas, where the patron saint of the city is kept, the view of the Costa del Sol is spectacular. The Museum of Miniatures (Museo de Miniaturas Carromato de Max), with its bizarre cute sculptures, such as the portrait of A. Lincoln painted on a pinhead or Da Vinci’s Last Supper, which can be seen on a grain of rice, is shown in the city map as most curious exhibition in the world recommended.

The small white houses adorned with flower pots on every corner or the courtyards decorated with colorful mosaics in the narrow streets are hidden beauties that you should definitely see.

All over the place you will find numerous restaurants and bars where you can enjoy the Andalusian specialties in a relaxed atmosphere. You can admire the flamenco show that takes place every Wednesday in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña in a typical Andalusian ambience with tapas and a glass of red wine.

Golf lovers will find very well-kept 18-hole golf courses in Mijas Costa, which are very popular with international golfers. With around 320 days of sunshine a year and an almost subtropical climate with an annual average temperature of 18 degrees, Mijas is also the perfect place to stay for a relaxing holiday for active holidaymakers who like to golf, hike, ride, sail, dive, etc.

Mijas is a place with the typical Moorish past. But also the Romans, the Phoenicians and the Greeks have left historical traces in this tranquil place. According to documented records and archaeological finds, it has been proven that the first people lived in this place as early as 800 years before Christ. The Romans gave the place the name Tamisa, which became a preferred trading place because of the existing ore mines and marble quarries. Only later was Mijas expanded as a fortress by the Romans. The location was predestined to be able to monitor the entire coast from this location. Some old wall remains are evidence of this era and can still be admired today.
