Mijas Costa is the part of Mijas that is a 12 km long coastline. Although it is no more than a 20-minute drive to the village of Mijas Pueblo with its typical Andalusian style, Mijas Costa is much more 21st century. There are lots of holiday homes with everything from small apartments to large villas with private pools. The beaches have lots of different water sports activities to offer their visitors. In the large residential areas Riviera del Sol and Sitio de Calahonda there are supermarkets, bars, restaurants, golf courses, sports facilities m.m. Many foreign citizens live here both permanently and only during the summer.

It can be said that La Cala de Mijas is the central part of Mijas Costa. Here, the Andalusian charm still lives on from the time it was an old fishing village. Now many Britons have moved here and the population has increased. Here you will find bars, restaurants, schools, libraries, shops, post offices, etc. There are also street markets with sales of fruit, vegetables, ceramics, clothes, flowers, etc.

Las Lagunas is the more modern, lively and commercial part of Mijas. Half of the population of Mijas live here. This is a city with all the latest and about 80% of the core was built in less than 30 years. There are no official boundaries but it is said that Las Lagunas is bounded on the south by the Fuengirola River and on the east by the border with Fuengirola and the A-7 road and on the north and west by the AP-7.

Parque Acuatico Mijas is a land of water and adventure for children of different ages. The park is located just outside Fuengirola on the way to Mijas. Here are wave machines water slides, jacuzzi, and water playgrounds for the little ones. There are also a number of restaurants, bars and picnic areas. Read more at www.aquamijas.com

One of Mijas Costa’s longest beaches is at Calahonda and is over 4500 meters long and 25 meters wide. The beach is located right next to the town of Calahonda and is therefore a very popular beach. There are many bars and restaurants here. This beach is very suitable for families because there are both lively beach bars and some that are much calmer.

You can also rent sun loungers and parasols on the beach. El Cabo Rocoso Beach is a pebble beach located on the Playa Marina Urban complex. This beach is calmer than the other beaches. You can rent water sports equipment here and there is a small kiosk.

Playa la Cala de Mijas is a 35 m wide and 2000 m long beach. Here is a nice promenade with many bars and restaurants. There are toilets, changing rooms, beach beds and parasols. There are also showers scattered along the beach. Playa del Chaparal is a beach that is a bit hidden from the road. This beach was chosen by Mijas town hall as Playa Naturista (Nudist beach).

There is a beach bar serving food and you can rent sun loungers and parasols. There is also a beach called El Faro and it is over 1000 meters long. Here come both those who want to swim and also people who fish from land. There is also a beach bar and you can rent sun loungers. El Charcon is a 940 meter quiet beach located east of El Faro. Here you can be in peace and quiet.

In prehistoric times, Mijas was founded by the Tartes. Remains of the fortification can still be seen on parts of the suburban wall. There were a lot of mineral resources, which attracted the Greeks and Phoenicians here.

It was the Romans, Visigoths and then Moors who ruled the village. The Moors wanted agriculture and animal husbandry in exchange for the inhabitants being allowed to keep their property and religion. The village was formerly called Tamisa but the Moors shortened it to Mixa and then it eventually became Mijas. The village was hit by piracy in the 19th century. This led to the construction of the watchtowers that still exist.

Mija’s main source of income during the 19th century was agriculture, fishing and mineral extraction. The vines were a significant source of income but were destroyed by the Philloxera plague. The paper mill was also an important source for the economy, especially during the middle of the 19th century. A road was opened between Mijas and Fuengirola in 1873, ending segregation between the cities.

But there were still poor means of communication. The telephones came in 1953 and the farms were scattered far apart. The work in the area was only collecting grass. To reduce unemployment, a factory was built and the first hotels were built in the 1950s. Many homes were also started to be built in the various cities and more and more cities emerged. Las Lagunas grew out of nowhere.
