Marbella, the most glamorous and popular holiday strongholds in beautiful Andalusia, invites holidaymakers to vacation on the Costa del Sol in the province of Málaga. Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Marbella is now the seventh largest city in Andalusia with 152,000 inhabitants due to rapid population growth in recent years.

If you want to travel to Marbella, you should book your flight to Málaga and from there drive to Marbella by rental car via the A-7 or AP7.

Anyone visiting Marbella should visit the Cortijo Miraflores cultural center. The great mix of city archive, oil museum and archaeological exhibition is perfect for a nice excursion. The old town is an example of the outstanding architecture of many important builders in the different epochs of Spain. The town hall from the 16th century, the hermitage of Santiago from the 15th century and of course the Casa del Corregidor from the 16th century are popular motifs for holiday pictures. In addition, the compact old town with its numerous small boutiques in the narrow streets offers a sparkling shopping experience.

If you can afford it, you can reach Marbella with your own boat in one of the four marinas. The maritime center of Marbella is the port of Puerto Banús. There are extravagant shops, expensive restaurants, luxury yachts and dream cars and in between there are many tourists who want to feel very close to the life of the rich and beautiful for a day.

Three restaurants with excellent star chefs offer culinary delights of a special kind and those who do not want to or cannot party on their own ship in the evening will find the best discos in Marbella in Puerto Banús. There are also several luxurious bars that offer a special flair for a drink in the evening.

The most important connection from the old town to the beach promenade is the wide promenade Avenida del Mar. The central parking garage of Marbella is located under its marble floor. On top of the marble, the well-known artist Salvador Dalí personally placed eight large surrealist bronze statues. Every Saturday in summer, regional artists exhibit their work on Avenida del Mar. This is also where the Marbella Fiesta takes place. The Alameda is a buffer zone between the main street and Avenida del Mar. There you can stroll under high banana trees, also on white marble, and look at the large round fountain, which is decorated with old tiles, which show scenes from the different Andalusian regions.

A royal palace in the style of the White House in Washington was built on a hill in the upscale Nagüeles district in the 1970s. However, this does not belong to the King of Spain, but to the King of Saudi Arabia! The extensive palace park is not accessible to the public and has a separate mosque.

During his lifetime, the Saudi King Fahd and his court regularly invaded Marbella in the summer and spoiled the local shops with purchases worth around 100 million euros annually. Unfortunately, Fahd’s successors have not continued this exercise, which has benefited Marbella’s business world.

A huge stylized sword was incorporated in a meadow between the castle park and the main street, which shone at night. Presumably in the wake of the European debate on Islamism, this sword was removed a while ago.

The cityscape is shaped by hundreds of private practices and private clinics that promise healing, regeneration and eternal beauty. A noticeable number of German and Scandinavian doctors fled the bad weather and the cash register to Marbella in order to build a lucrative new existence under the sun. Special mention should be made of the Buchinger Clinic in the Nagüeles district, in whose long corridors artists repeatedly exhibit their works.

The beautiful beach promenade from Puerto Banús to the city center is an Eldorado for cyclists and joggers. The best golf courses can be found on the western outskirts in the Guadalmina district. Professional football clubs from all over Europe train on the football fields of San Pedro in winter. There is also a water ski facility in San Pedro.

Neolithic settlements have been identified in the Marbella area. The Phoenicians later established a trading post here. In the 3rd century BC The Romans came and in 771 AD the Moors, who called the place Marbilha. The Catholic kings conquered the place in 1485.

More important than the village of Marbella was the city of San Pedro de Alcántara, eight km west of Marbella. In Ronda, the signposts that do not point to Marbella, but to San Pedro, remind you of this. At the beginning of the 1950s, Alfonso von Hohenlohe transformed Marbella from a simple farming village into a posh seaside resort for celebrities. Soon after, San Pedro was incorporated into Marbella. Many well-known personalities such as Aristotle Onassis, Guy de Rothschild, Sean Connery, Edward Kennedy, Veronika Ferres and many others. stayed in Marbella in the following decades and thus contributed to the rise of Marbella to the seaside resort of the European jet set.

In 1961, the building contractor and president of the Athletico Madrid football club, Jesus Gil, was elected mayor. Under the Gil administration, Marbella experienced a construction boom but at the same time an enormous increase in corruption and money laundering. In 2001, Gil was arrested. In 2006 the city council was dissolved by the Andalusian state government. Charges were brought against 96 people. The corruption damage amounts to at least 2.4 billion euros, approx. 10,000 buildings now have to be subsequently legalized in order to pay off Marbella’s debts of 100 million euros with the Andalusian state government.
