Estepona is located in the province of Málaga, in the south of Andalusia, directly on the Mediterranean Sea on the Costa del Sol. The best way to reach the seaside resort from most countries is via Malaga airport. It only takes 60 minutes to drive on the A-7 expressway or the AP-7 motorway, which is subject to a charge. It is 33 km from Estepona to Marbella city center and 90 km from Málaga.

Despite tourism, the city still has something of its Andalusian charm. There is something for everyone with the many beaches and Estepona’s central location allows many day trips to the region.

The population of 67,000 people triples in the summer months. Behind the city towers the massive Reales, the 1,440 m high rust-red local mountain of Estepona. It keeps the north winds away from the city and allows the seaside resort on the Costa del Sol 300 days of sunshine a year.

Swimming, hiking, playing golf or just relaxing. Estepona has a lot to offer – especially in the summer months.

Estepona officially has twelve beaches. These extend for almost 15 kilometers between the towns of Casares and Manilva in the west and Marbella in the east.

The smaller Playa El Cristo near the port is very popular with families. Costa Natura Beach (Playa Arroyo Vaquero) in the west of Estepona was the first official nudist beach in Spain.

In the old town there are more and more houses with a house wall painted by artists.

Also worth seeing are the Estepona Orchidarium, the Paleontological Museum (Museo Paleontológico de Estepona) and the Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueológico).

Many hotels along the 21 kilometer long coastline are located directly on the wide sandy beach. The best known is the 5-star Hotel Kempinski Bahía. Beautiful luxury hotels by the sea are also the Elba Estepona Gran Hotel & Thalasso Spa and the Marriott’s Playa Andaluza.

If you want to stay in the old town of Estepona, the romantic Hotel Casa Veracruz is a good address.

The excellent restaurants on the harbor, but especially on Calle Caridad, and the chiringuitos on the beach serve Andalusian delicacies as well as international cuisine. After a relaxed dinner with a glass of the famous sherry wine, there are lively hours in the countless bars and clubs at the marina or in the city center.

At the sea there are water sports such as kite surfing and jet skiing, but it is guaranteed not to be boring on land either. Golf on one of the six nearby courses, horse riding in the Escuela del Arte Ecuestre riding stadium.

Play sports in two football arenas and two complexes for indoor sports, view exhibitions in the congress hall, enjoy plays and concerts in the Teatro Auditorio Felipe VI or open air concerts in Parque San Visit Isidro de los Pedregales. Estepona now also has a private university, the second in Andalusia after the Universidad Loyola. Until the new building in the west of Estepona is completed, the university will be housed in the Centro Cultural Padre Manuel near the football stadium.

Estepona is known for its exuberant summer fiestas. It starts with the night celebration for the summer solstice “Quema de Los Bigotes de San Juan” (burning of the mustache of San Juan) on June 23rd, followed by the annual city festival Fiestamayores Ferias at the beginning of July and the fishermen’s festival Virgen del Carmen every year on the 16th. July.

On these festive occasions, the historic old town of Estepona and the huge new Feria site on the northern outskirts are meeting places for locals and tourists almost around the clock.

The first traces of settlement go back to the Paleolithic and the Phoenicians. The Romans came to the area around 300 BC and built salt fish factories and thermal baths. For 700 years the Arabs shaped the city with their fortress Al Extebuna. Some ruins of the watchtowers on Estepona Beach can still be seen today, where pirates were kept on the lookout.
